The Willie August Project's best-selling studio CD, Surrender to the Wind has charted as #1 New Release on XM/Sirius Satellite Radio Real Jazz. Three of the album's tracks have been award winners in the Song of the Year international songwriting contest.
The music is deeply rooted in the ECM tradition (Pat Metheny, Charles Lloyd, Gary Burton, et al.), but also features driving swing that echoes postbop icons like Wes Montgomery. To all of these influences, group cofounders Ben Siems (guitar) and Jeremy Hauer (drums) add eclectic elements that make this ensemble a unique voice in the world of present-day progressive jazz. CADENCE magazine notes that "Siems is a fountain of muted melody," while the Minneapolis STAR-TRIBUNE adds that "Hauer uses a drum kit in a painterly, postmodern way." Most remarkable is the deep, instinctive connection that these two musicians share, which jazz critic Clifford Allen sums up simply: "The rhythmic interplay between Siems and Hauer is at times rather astounding."
Upright bassists Scot Hornick and Jim Chenoweth round out the group, with guest artist Laura Caviani shining on piano on the album's opening and closing tracks.
